Car Show Themes

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Car shows are great activities to do during the summertime. The weather is perfect for an outdoor gathering. Draw in hundreds of people during the summer weekends this year.

Successful car hop shows are ones that are well planned out. Making plans ahead of time can go a long way in making your car show look well put together. A good idea is to have a theme with your car show. Here are a few ideas:

1.) Look to the past car shows for ideas. If recent car shows have been done in your area, do not repeat their theme. A theme, such as car hops, may be a good idea – but only if it has not been done for a while.

2.) Think about specific vehicle-inspired themes. You can hold a car show featuring a specific vehicle or vehicle type. Some popular choices would be mustangs or corvettes.

3.) Classic Cars are a great theme. Restore cars from the 1950’s and bring in a car hop or sock hop theme. Car hops and other activities can bring in more customers and make the car show more fun.

Car Hops at Antique Car Shows

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

Antique car shows are a great venue for car hops. It can be very simple to set up a drive-in style catering event to make the antique car show a lot more fun. Having a waiter or waitress bring food to people in their cars can be a great way to make a car show that much more exciting.

Make an antique car show fun by serving good food that deal with a fifties theme. A good choice of food would be hamburgers and fries. You can also serve ice cream sundaes and milkshakes.

A car hop can be a fun way to bring customer’s their food. Servers can bring the food out to people in their car in roller skates and poodle skirts. Have them wear car hop costumes and have fun with the drive-in-car hop theme.

Car hop costumes include sock hop attire. Poodle skirts, white socks, and a ponytail for girls, and blue jeans and a white t-shirt with hair slicked back is a great choice for guys. Add roller skates and you have the perfect car hop costume.

If you are looking for inspiration for car hops you can look for car hop costume videos online or on YouTube. There are also other older television shows or movies that often used car hops. The most popular shows were Happy Days and American Graffiti.

While most television shows and movies showed that waiters and waitresses brought food to the cars mainly in roller skates, that is not always true. A lot of waiters and waitresses did not use roller skates. On the contrary, most car hops worked on foot.

FUN 50’s Poodle Skirts!

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Retro 50’s clothing styles bring back images of FUN! This is especially true for the poodle skirt. When we see a poodle skirt, we think of dancing – the fun 50’s swing dancing.

Although poodles weren’t the only embellishment used on skirts in the 50’s, for some reason they are the best remembered. To bring back the nostalgia of the 50’s, poodles are the animal of choice to have on your skirt, complete with a leash. Traditionally the leash looped from the poodle’s neck up to the skirt’s belt.

Many poodle skirts are made to be a full circle of fabric with an opening for the girl’s waist. This way as the girl twirls around dancing, the skirt naturally spins out from her body. Of course poodle skirts are worn with lots of fluffy petticoats underneath to help fluff them out even more.

A short sleeved sweater or cotton blouse is often worn with a poodle skirt. And don’t forget the traditional pony tail with a ribbon tied in your hair. Bobby socks and saddle shoes or white tennis shoes will complete your outfit for a truly retro look.

Plus size poodle skirts can be very flattering as the fullness of the hemline contrasted with tightness at the waist can draw the eye in. Wearing a contrasting belt helps in this case. This helps create a sculptured silhouette.

Fashionable Petticoats

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

The petticoat has been around for centuries.  A petticoat, or pettiskirt, is an undergarment that women wear for fashion.  It could be made with one layer of fabric, but it usually consisted of several layers.

Back when women underwear was not invented, a petticoat was worn as an extra layer for privacy.  This underskirt was also worn to have the latest fashion.  It also gave the appearance of a smaller waist and larger bust.

Pettiskirts were made of a variety of fabrics.  The wealthy generally had the more expensive fabrics in their pettiskirts like silk.  The generally population in the summer wore cotton fabric pettiskirts.  Wool fabric pettiskirts were worn in the winter for added warmth.

Petticoats For Wedding Dresses

Friday, May 14th, 2010

There are a lot of varieties of petticoats out there. Undergarments specifically for wedding dresses or formals make a big difference in the look and feel of the dress. Wedding shops often can give you good recommendations on which ones to get.

To begin you need to find the right undergarment for your dress. Petticoats can really bring extra elegance to a beautiful wedding dresses. They make the dress look its best.

There are different petticoat styles. Decide what type you need first. Do you need a hoop skirt or do you need one with out hoops? I would recommend if you do need a hoop skirt that you wear another undergarment on top of that so the hoops do not show through your wedding dress.

Hoops take a lot of practice to walk in. If you bend over all the hoops bring your dress upright. That is why it is a very good idea to get use to wearing it and how to sit down in it or bend over so you don’t flash all of your guests on your wedding day.

If you would rather not use a hoop skirt another option you have is netting. Netting is a great choice for wedding dresses. It stops your wedding dress from tucking in between your legs while you walk. It’s not very glamorous to walk down the aisle with your dress constantly pulling through your legs.

Dressing Up With a Tea Party

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Dressing up in children poodle skirts is a fun activity for any young girl. One fun opportunity for girls to dress up in fancy clothes and children poodle skirts is through a tea party. Even though there will not be actual “tea” served at the young table, having a sip tea party can be a lot of fun for a group of young girls.

Hosting a tea party can be beneficial for parents as well. Children will be able to practice good table manners during the tea party, and you can even teach them party etiquette such as sending out thank you notes after the party is over. Parents can also sit back and visit with other parents while the younger girls enjoy their party.

When planning a tea party the table is the main focus. Find a pretty tablecloth that fits with the theme of the party. Soft pastel colors work great.

A fun way to invite guests to the tea party is by cutting out teapot shapes and attaching a label in the shape of a tea bag. You can use ribbon or yarn to attach the tea bag label to the teapot cutout. Write the guests name on the tea bag cut out, and put any particulars on the teapot.

Quick Outline of Sock Hop History

Friday, April 9th, 2010

1. School dances during the 1950’s were normally held in school gymnasiums. This was a time when poodle skirts were popular, and so was removing shoes. To avoid getting scratches on the wood floor everyone was asked to take their shoes off. Thus, the sock hop was born.
2. Sock hops were very popular. They allowed more group activities, instead of having to arrive to the dance with an escort or date. Group dances became more popular, though couple dances continued to be favorites as well.
3. Rock and roll became popular during the 50s. Most music played at sock hops were records played on a turntable. Popular music artists of this age were Chuck Berry, Eddie Fisher, Bill Haley, and Elvis Presley.
4. Popular clothing styles worn at sock hops were poodle skirts and blue jeans. When wearing poodle skirts or jeans be sure to take off shoes for the sock hop. You could also wear other popular 50’s styles beside poodle skirts, such as greaser outfits.

5. There are many great hairstyles to go with your poodle skirt and 50’s costume. Men wore their hair slicked back in a smooth style. Women had more options, such as wearing the classic ponytail, beehive, or tight curls.
6. Food in the fifties was similar to what is served today, just dated. Try doing a twist on the soda shop, with various old fashioned sodas available. You could also serve old school burgers and fries for a fun touch.
7. Today sock hops are still held, though not because people are afraid of a gymnasium getting scuffed up. Sock hop themes can be fun for people of all ages, and provide a great theme for a party. Participants are usually encouraged to dress up in 50’s costumes and dance with out their shoes.
8. If you are attending a modern day sock hop but are looking for inspirational ideas for your costume, there are plenty of movies you can check out to get ideas. The movie Grease is a good movie to watch since it showcases preppy styles and greaser styles. Another popular choice is the newer movie Hairspray.
