How to Plan an Amazing Sock Hop For the Holidays

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Looking to liven up your holiday season? Throw a sock hop. Sock hop dances are a wonderful way for people to get together and celebrate for the holidays.

Start with a great invitation. Invitations are the first thing your guests will look at so be sure that you have a fun invitation to share. You can make hand-made invitations or purchase ones that have a 50’s theme.

Another important aspect of sock hops is the costume choices. 50’s attire is mandatory to pull off a successful sock hop. This means wearing bobby socks, saddle shoes, cuffed jeans, leather jackets, poodle skirts, and cat glasses.

Dances need really good music to dance to. Stick to the popular classic choices with your music. Elvis Presley and Bill Haley will definitely liven up the dance party.

You could hire a choreographer to teach some fun 50’s dance moves to people who are interested. There are quite a few fun dance steps including the bop, the hand jive, and the cha cha. Some people like to have the choreographer teach guests the dance moves an hour or half  hour before the dance starts so they can use those moves during the dance.

Fashion trends will come and go. Each decade brings in new fashion trends, and they will change just as quickly. This can be a good thing, especially when the fashion brings in things like high bangs, rat-tails, and those dreadful skinny jeans.

For party favors you can buy inexpensive sunglasses from a dollar store. Place an orange napkin in between the folds of the sunglasses. For girls, you can add pearls on their table setting. Your guests can use these party favors as an accessory to their costume.

For the meal, include a burger and fries. Instead of serving coca cola, make homemade root beer. The dry ice can make quite an eerie decoration for the party, and you will impress your guests with your delicious homemade root beer in the process.

Poodle Skirt How-To

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Unsure what to wear for Halloween this year? Going as a 50’s sock hop girl is simple, classic, and fun. Plus, don’t have to go out and buy the costume; you can make it yourself!

Like we said, the costume is very simple. All you really need is a scarf for your hair, a white shirt, a poodle skirt, and white shoes. Those are items that can be found in almost everyone’s closet… except for the poodle skirt. But don’t worry, like we said, you can make it yourself.

The simplest way to do this is to grab a skirt that you already have. The skirt should fit you a little higher on the waist than a normal skirt, and should hit you at about mid-calf. If it doesn’t, that’s an easy fix: just hem the skirt up a few inches, and pull the waist in a bit with a few quick stitches.
