In fact, their location is what earned them their name. In order to protect the varnished gymnasium floor, dancers were required to remove their shoes at the beginning of the dance. This left them in their socks and stockings, which helped them in doing dances such as the Twist, the Mashed Potato, and many more.

Due to their popularity, most dances were sock hops. However, hops were different from other dances in that they were informal. They were very common and didn’t require teens to get too dressed up.

Sock Hop Costumes

Friday, July 9th, 2010

One of America’s funnest times to look back on was the 50’s.  As we reminisce and look back it is fun to do this with a sock hop.  If you are invited to one of these or are considering attending one there are lots of fun costumes to choose from that can help you rock the night away.

A classic for young ladies is the poodle skirt.  These were longer skirts that were typically adorned by a poodle on the bottom side.  Bobby socks and saddle shoes can adorn one’s feet while a classic ponytail with a matching ribbon adds accent to the hair.

If you are looking for a bit more rebellious side to show at your sock hop, try the “greaser” look.  You do this by wearing a tight pencil skirt along with a button down blouse with the top two buttons left undone.  Make sure that bright red lipstick is worn and that hair is very poufy and tall.  A pink lady jacket is also a nice touch.

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Poodle skirts are beautiful items for women to wear. They are fashionable and yet unique. Poodle skirts are a unique way to show off your femininity.

Poodle skirts have a full circle skirt to it. This is perfect for swing and sock hops, but also for any type of dance. Poodle skirts are great for spinning. Teenagers and adults alike love this type of style. It also is a smash hit for children.

In the 1950’s poodle skirts were very popular. They were often worn by the younger crowd. Teenagers loved wearing the ultra fashionable style and making it in to their own unique style.

Poodle skirts at the time were made out of a few different materials, but felt was generally used. Felt is a good material because it is easy to use and quite inexpensive to get. Poodle skirts got their name “poodle skirts” because it was popular at the time to have an applique of a french poodle on the skirt.

While french poodles were not the only thing used on poodle skirts, they are the easiest to remember and the most popular choice of applique. Other appliques that were used were black dance records or telephones. Sometimes poodle skirts even had sayings put on them that were popular at the time.

Crinoline petticoats were also popular during this time. Petticoats were made in a variety of styles and colors to fit different styles and tastes. Petticoats For Wedding Dresses

Friday, May 14th, 2010

There are a lot of varieties of petticoats out there. Undergarments specifically for wedding dresses or formals make a big difference in the look and feel of the dress. Wedding shops often can give you good recommendations on which ones to get.

To begin you need to find the right undergarment for your dress. Petticoats can really bring extra elegance to a beautiful wedding dresses. They make the dress look its best.

There are different petticoat styles. Decide what type you need first. Do you need a hoop skirt or do you need one with out hoops? I would recommend if you do need a hoop skirt that you wear another undergarment on top of that so the hoops do not show through your wedding dress.

Hoops take a lot of practice to walk in. If you bend over all the hoops bring your dress upright. That is why it is a very good idea to get use to wearing it and how to sit down in it or bend over so you don’t flash all of your guests on your wedding day.

If you would rather not use a hoop skirt another option you have is netting. Netting is a great choice for wedding dresses. It stops your wedding dress from tucking in between your legs while you walk. It’s not very glamorous to walk down the aisle with your dress constantly pulling through your legs.

Tips For Buying Petticoats Online

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Petticoats are a beautiful article of clothing. Sadly, there are very few local or department stores that sell them. It isn’t an article of clothing that you can normally just go shopping around for at the mall.

That leaves a huge market for online shopping. Online shopping now has a huge market for unique and diverse things. It is a convenient way to shop for many people.

Petticoats in general are best found online. There may be exceptions to this rule, but the truth is that underskirts are not found in department stores anymore. If you want to find a variety of styles, colors, and materials your best option is shopping for them online.

Look for the size guide to determine what size you need to order. Since you won’t be trying on anything physically you want to match your measurements as closely as possible. If the size guide says “fits generously” take that in to consideration and order a size smaller than you normally do.

Find out what type of petticoat you need. A lot of bridal gowns and prom dresses already have built in pettiskirts. Decide what size petticoat you would need for your particular dress to give it the fullness you want.

Keep a picture of your dress handy while you shop. If you are searching for a pettiskirt for your wedding dress it is also a good idea to keep your color palette next to you as well for reference. That way you can make sure the petticoat matches your wedding colors.

When and Why Petticoats Are Appropriate

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Petticoats are worn to add a fuller shape to your dress or skirt. There are different types which which can be used. Below we point out a few.

Hoop Skirt – Hoop skirts are underskirts that have lightweight hoops to add a bell shape to the dress. The hoops are made out of plastic, nylon, or lightweight steel. A century ago hoop skirts were very heavy and hard for women to wear, but with the lightweight material it does not weigh women down anymore.

Hoop skirts are used for large, full, ball gowns. Similar to dresses seen in “Gone With The Wind”, large a-line or ball gowns need underskirts to keep the full shape of their dress. Hoop skirts are usually made out of cotton or polyester. Practice makes perfect with this undergarment, since it can be difficult to move in.

Crinoline – Crinoline is a common word used for undergarment. While manufacturers love to refer to any undergarment as crinoline, crinoline is usually made out of many layers of tulle or netting. It can be made out of flexible hoop wires to add fullness.

Layer hoops are not always needed, or wanted, with crinoline pettiskirts. Depending on how full the dress needs to be there may only be a need for a layered crinoline undergarment. Crinoline is used in wedding attire, but can be used on other style dresses such as the 50’s style dress.
